Low-carb chips are gaining in popularity, and for good reason. They taste great, and they are a great snack option that will keep hunger at bay for hours, but they are not without their downsides. They are extremely high in fat, which is prohibitive for some (as much as 20% of the calories in many chips!). They are also full of carbs, which can cause problems for diabetics. Just because you are low-carb does not mean that you can eat any food you want. (And if you are in fact a low-carb enthusiast, you should make sure that you are eating a well-balanced meal.)

If you’ve been following the blog in the past couple of years, you’ve probably seen one or two recipes pop up for a Parmesan cheese chip. These are the kind of low-carb snacks that I used to eat as a kid, and they’re a quick and easy alternative to other roasted nuts.

While it may not be the healthiest snack, a bowl of hot roasted nuts during the holidays is still a great way to get a little bit of your favorite salty, savory snack. And one of my family’s favorite snacks are our homemade Parmesan chips. It’s super easy to make with a simple Parmesan cheese recipe, a food processor, and some good ol’ fashioned patience, but the payoff is big: a snack that’s crispy, crunchy, and full of flavor.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).

  2. Using parchment paper, line a baking sheet.

  3. In a mixing dish, combine the cheese and seeds.

  4. Fill the baking sheet with tiny mounds of the mixture, allowing some space between them. The mounds should not be flattened. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Check in often. Light brown, not dark brown, should be the color of the chips.

  5. Remove the chips from the baking paper and set aside to cool before serving.

Note

This recipe yields about 16-20 chips. This implies that each dish will include approximately 8-10 pieces.

Tip!

You may use whatever seed you choose, including sesame, hemp, and others.
